Hong Kong – The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) announces its call for entries for the ARCASIA Awards for Architecture (AAA) 2016. The awards celebrate the very best work produced by architecture professionals in Asia, organised by the Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA), which consists of 19 national or regional institutes of architects from the Asian region, including the HKIA.
The AAA is Asia’s prestigious architecture competition established to encourage the development of the Asian built environment and acknowledge exemplary architectural work in Asia. The scope of the Awards was last broadened in 2013 with the goal of encompassing all the aspects related to outstanding architecture. Entries are now accepted in ten competition categories, including Residential Projects (sub-divided into Single and Multiple Family residences), Public Amenities (sub-divided into Commercial, Resort, Social/Institutional and Specialized Buildings), Industrial Buildings, Conservation Projects, Socially Responsible Architecture and also Sustainability Architecture.
The last AAA’s Building of The Year Award, a special recognition honoured to the most outstanding Gold winner, went to The Naka Hotel in Phuket, Thailand by Duangrit Bunnag. Among contenders from Hong Kong, the CIC Zero Carbon Building by Ronald Lu & Partners scored Honorable Mention in the Sustainability category; Al Shaqab Equestrian Performance Arena in Doha, a work of Leigh & Orange Ltd, snagged the same honour in the Specialized Buildings category; while Aedas’ Sandcrawler was awarded Mention in Commercial Buildings.
The AAA recently opened at the same time as the ARCASIA Students’ Architectural Design Competition 2016, under the theme of Green Lifestyle. Both opened for entries in March 2016. Full-time students of architecture or related courses accredited by respective ARCASIA member institutes are encouraged to compete with unique ideas that addresses sustainability in the built environment in their respective countries and regions.

Shortlisted entrants will be featured in the 17th Asian Congress of Architects (ACA17), to be hosted by the HKIA in Hong Kong for the first time in September, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Winners will also be announced at a glittering awards ceremony on 29th September during the Conference. The Conference and Students’ Jamboree are sponsored by CreateHK, the Government of the HKSAR.
