Toronto, Canada – The Brownie Awards recognizes innovators and visionaries who are dedicated to the rehabilitation of brownfield sites that were once contaminated, underutilized and underdeveloped into productive residential and commercial projects that contribute to the growth of healthy communities across Canada.
The Bata Shoe Factory has received “Best Small Project” for its highly sustainable adaptive re-use conversion into a mixed-use residential, commercial and community building. The renovated building retained the original concrete structure, saving close to 80 percent of the original building’s embodied carbon, and uses a geothermal system and heat exchangers for its HVAC needs, reducing CO2 emissions to nearly zero.
